No, rilly, someone in physics please tell me because I need to claw some of this year back and update this blog properly.

In the mean time…

I made this for our sister iPad mag. Kinda love it. Made with left-over fabric from the Tweed bow necklace I did for them a while back (but still available on the Apple Newsstand, peeps). Hubs helped with the cutting (I'm not massively handy with a pair of scissor, which I blame entirely on my being left-handed (and not just crap at cutting), and then it's just a case of a bit of appliqué. Nice huh? Be sure to select some soft fabric or you'll be in for a restless night…

I've also **fanfare please** taught myself to crochet. I know, I know – despaired in an earlier post about those who can attesting to its ease ("Oh but it's eeeeaaassssy!" they'd scoff, which would usually be met with a thunderous look from me).

See that there? That's 40+ crochet hexagons.

It's… not easy. No, rilly. But it Does. Just. Click. All of a sudden. From out of nowhere. One minute all I can do is a chain, and then next, I'm trebling and cackling and getting ever-so-slightly tangled p in my yarn.

I swear, I have no other explanation other than I just kept trying. I also used a slightly weightier yarn than all the other times (Aran), and I also watched a lot of YouTube videos to get it non-squiffy in my head. I think YouTube definitely helped – those stupid diagrams of pencil-drawn hands just weren't cutting it. Crochet is my new love, and (although I am scared of doing anything much other than a granny square – for now) I can't see myself going back to knitting any time soon. I know – I never thought I say it. And me from last year would totally be seething at me from a few seconds ago for typing it. Sorry, Past Me (also, you should really check out YouTube for some tutes, m'kay?).
Remember my knitted bow I did a while ago? Meet its young sibling, the knitted bow ring – gifted this xmas to my BFF, Amy (who is also modelling it above). Nice huh? It's basically a long thin (I think I cast on four or five stitches) strip of stocking stitch, folded over and with the yarn wound around the middle as usual. Then hot glue gun (or tie) onto a ring back and you're done. Cute huh?Monty Rosehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01958397616115845882noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7670672915454261297.post-53818980831827439252013-01-25T17:52:00.000+00:002013-02-27T17:41:24.975+00:00Monty Rose's Bread and Butter pudding (or why I am a fat wife)
The thought of bread and butter pudding always reminded me of school dinners. Rows and rows of cheapy sliced white bread, glistening with spread and not much else. Literally bread. And butter. Urgh.

But this Christmas, we popped down the road from our hotel to Quod (I've always wanted to go there but never got round to it) and had their bread and butter pudding with apple and blackberry. It. Was. Amazing. I just had to sample every last morsel to make sure I'd tasted every ingredient so I could try and replicate it later. Quite a few trials later (and with this recipe for help), I think I've just about cracked two versions…

Monty's apple and blackberry bread and butter puddingIngredients

Nob of butter

Half a bag of frozen blackberries

4 Pink Lady apples, peeled, and sliced

Couple of squirts of lemon juice

Cinammon

A good two dollops of honey

½ cup sugar, plus 1 cup, plus 1 tablespoon

Couple of drops of vanilla

4 eggs

2 cups semi-skimmed milk

1/3 cup Ameretto

800 grams brioche (about 2 loaves), ripped into chunks

Spray fry

To make

Preheat the oven to 180 degrees C

Melt the butter in a large pan. Add the fruit and lemon juice. Simmer.

Add in cinammon, vanilla, honey, ½ cup of sugar. Keep simmering, stirring occasionally for 20 minutes.

In a large bowl, whisk together 4 eggs, 2 cups of milk, ameretto and 1 cup of sugar. Submerge the brioche bits in the mixture, and allow them to soak up all the goodness for about 5 minutes.

Meanwhile, spray fry the inside of a baking dish. Place some of the brioche mixture in the bottom of the dish. Then spread the apple and blackberry mixture all over, creating a layer of fruit. Cover with the second half of the brioche mixture. Pour in any last bits of milky mixture that hadn't been soaked up. Top with a sprinkling of 1 tablespoon sugar.

Bake for 45 minutes, until puffed and golden. Serve warm with custard if you like.

Happy New Year! Are we still allowed to say that? A busy Chrimbletide season for the Monty household. Lots of Christmas crafting, then a certain someone's birthday, plus new year, so I've only really got back into the swing of things now, plus the Mollie team have been busy busy on our latest issue, hence the net silence. But onward!

One thing that's been keeping me busy but is such a pleasure has been crafting for our sister iPad magazine, Gathered by Mollie Makes. You've already seen a sneak peak of the bow necklace from issue 10 and now here's my chain bag from issue 9.

Massively simple, the only tricky bit is cutting (or getting a locksmith to cut) the chain to the right size. Then it's just some glue gun fun. So simple, **I** can do it.

Look out for more goodies from me coming to an iPad near you…Monty Rosehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01958397616115845882noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7670672915454261297.post-2884689586757060892012-12-20T13:00:00.000+00:002013-02-27T18:29:43.903+00:00Tweed bow necklace

Super excited about this latest project for Gathered by Mollie Makes (out 21/12 - what a good date!). I've always wanted to do a tweed bow necklace but a combination of not having enough confidence (and not getting my Singer skills on) meant it had been sitting in my head for a while, crying like a puppy left outside a shop. Nice image…

Anyway, it's (again) an easy make. Took me all of ten minutes more or less. You can sew it if you like, but I made mine from hemming tape. Check it out coming to an iPad near you this Friday
If you know me, you'll know I have a thing about dates (we got married on 5/5 after all). But this is epic. We'll never have this kind of date alignment again in our lifetime.

So here are some frivolous sparkly nails…

I'm not usually one for glitter as I hate the texture it leaves, but this one from No7 is lovely and smooth, plus the chunkier glitter mixed with dots of the stuff make it look a little bit nail arty. I load it all up on the tips, over Rimmel's Lycra Pro Anti-fade in Desire, which is a dark purpley brown (I love a fat brush, me).Monty Rosehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01958397616115845882noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7670672915454261297.post-90280865666921632912012-12-12T11:00:00.000+00:002013-02-27T18:30:23.551+00:00Christmas bauble bunting

One of the main rules for shopping in Poundland: make sure the thing you're buying isn't faulty. When buying baubles from Poundland (and especially when buying a crap-load of baubles from Poundland) you should rilly make sure they all have little dangle-thread things for which to hang from your tree, no? Shame I didn't take my own advice.

But what to do with them? Well, all my wreaths had been made (which you can see here and here) so I couldn't do a bauble wreath (which actually I was quite glad about - not sure I have the patience for that) and I'd just made a load of paper bunting from an old book so did a bit of crafty maths and came up with bauble bunting – or Baunting if you will. Again, blummin easy, and better than tinsel.
Remember that book I mentioned in my paper wreath earlier? Well I had some pages left, so I thought, "Why not?" It's a good one for in front of the telly, and is super-simple and quick to do. Yes, my paper bauble bunting has the word "vomit" in the middle of it. Ho ho ho…Monty Rosehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01958397616115845882noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7670672915454261297.post-51202275623788030442012-12-11T13:24:00.000+00:002013-02-27T18:31:16.412+00:00Christmas wreaths chez MontyIt's beginning to look a lot like Christmas…

After I made my first (trad) wreath (this red velvet and gold one, in fact), the bug bit, and I just had to make more. I knew I'd be making an obligatory yarn wreath before I tried the trad one, and was pretty chuffed with how it turned out. I made sure I cut the felt flowers on the wonk – no, rilly I meant for it to be like this – as I thought it would make them look more real (altho quite how real a felt flower can get, I have no idea).

Next up, my third and final one. Wasn't sure what to do for it, until I found a left-over book in the office (it was an old covermount from a magazine we'd got in). Loath to stick it in the recycling, one of the team suggested I use it for my final wreath. And **ding** an idea struck. Ripped into strips and dunked in a bit of PVA/water mix, it looks pretty awesome (even if it was uber messy). I was going to do some book flowers (like the felt ones above) but decided it needed a pop of colour. And so, a good-old pom-pom or two!
An nice easy one, this.

Get a button, if necessary snip off the shank (are they called shanks?) using some heavy duty pliers (I used garden shears).

Hot-glue-gun it on to an earring backing and you're done!Monty Rosehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01958397616115845882noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7670672915454261297.post-88885036212356748512012-12-02T11:00:00.000+00:002013-02-27T18:37:04.402+00:00Our wedding

Start spreading the news
He's Dave Montrose today
He wants to be a part of her
Sarah! Sarah!

His high heeled boots
Are really quite... gay...
But she has married him anyway!
He's Dave Montrose!

He gets to wake up
With a woman... at last
Oh yes those jokes about sheep
Are all in his past

His neat little beard
Hasn't even been shaved!
He'll make a brand new start of it
As Dave Montrose!

Now he's a married man
He'll get some when she says he can
That's up to you
Sarah, Sarah...

**Talking interlude** Ladies and gentlemen I would like to take this opportunity to talk about a man that Max and I both love dearly. A man who has in the past been known by many names...

First there was of course Tupper
Then Tupps, Tuppy, The Tuppmeister
or The Tuppinator.

Who could forget that international hit single that he inspired - My Tupps my Tupps my lovely lady Tupps - Check him out...
Then there was that somewhat disturbing if entertaining video in which he starred and which went on to become so popular on the internet: Two girls, one Tupp.

But from this day forth he shall forever be known by one name because...

**sings**
He's Dave Montrose!
He gets to wake up to a pretty awesomo treat
To find he loves Doctor Who
And Radio 2
He's not a cocknose
No, he's Dave Montrose...

Tonight he's counting his luck
Getting ready to ffff....all asleep
She'll make a brand new man of him
In her own way!

Now he's a married man
He'll love her all he can
So here's to you
Montrose and Montrose!

Ladies and Gentlemen please raise your glasses to the happy couple, David and Sarah Montrose!

Today I will marry my friend – the one I will live with, dream with and love. David/Sarah, when I’m with you, I feel I can be the person I want to be, and I cannot imagine my life without you.
You make me smile, you stick up for me, you take care of me and you are always interested in what I have to say and do.
Today, I want to make a promise to you and to myself, in front of our friends and family, to love and honour, protect and respect you for the rest of my life.
I vow to trust and value your opinions, and stand by your actions. I pledge to always treat you as my best friend, and equal. I will ask for help when I need it, and offer help when asked.
From this day forward I will cherish you. I will look with joy down the path of our tomorrow's knowing we will walk it together side by side, hand in hand and heart to heart.
Let us be friends and lovers, and grow old together. And let us make all the years of our lives together be the best years of our lives. For now and forever.
and that is how I like it, thank you very much. I also really really like crafting with bits and bobs you can get from the hardware shop, or doing things you wouldn't normally do to bits and bobs.

Zips, spikes and hardware in general are big this winter, and so I wanted to have a play with zips and see what I could do. Check out these earrings, and if you ant to know how to make them – or a ring version (or indeed,a brooch version), then check out this week's Gathered on sale today!

[caption id="attachment_186" align="aligncenter" width="300"] Zippy zippy earring[/caption]

[caption id="attachment_185" align="aligncenter" width="300"] Zip earring[/caption]Monty Rosehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01958397616115845882noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7670672915454261297.post-3286148635117205432012-11-29T17:49:00.000+00:002013-02-27T17:38:18.160+00:00Red velvet and gold Christmas wreath[caption id="attachment_181" align="aligncenter" width="300"] Trad wreath[/caption]

My first ever wreath and it was easy peasy. We went just as the Venice Film Fest was winding down, and rumours that Clooney's boat had moored off ones of the islands kept us (OK, me) rather excited – not because I fancy the Cloon, more because he's famous, m'kay?

We loved Venice. It was a bit like being in a Terry Gilliam film, where – at every corner turned – we expected to see some sinister, quirky figure, all moustachioed twirling his cape. It's also exactly like being in the film Labyrinth, where Sarah tries the most local path somewhere only for it to take her right back to the beginning. Very early on, we realised that just because we could see where we wanted to get to, it didn't mean we could walk around the corner and get there. It would usually involve going back on ourselves, over a few bridges and then doubling back yet again. But we'd get there in the end…!

We also found a gorgeous vintage shop called Carpe Diem. Budget didn't allow a proper rummage, so we settled on drooling and taking lots of photos instead.

[slideshow]Monty Rosehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01958397616115845882noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7670672915454261297.post-74333994372341140572012-11-25T11:15:00.000+00:002013-02-27T17:38:18.146+00:00Obligatory cat post

If you follow me on Instagram (I'm monty_rose - feel free to add me) it means you're a) already sick of seeing photos of my cat, Rosie, have stopped following me and are plotting my downfall b) Quite like cats, especially rather pretty torties like her c) more of a dog person, actually, but are way too lazy to do anything about it.

Apologies if you're in category a) or c)

We adopted Rosie from the RSPCA rescue centre in Bath (otherwise known as Bath Cats & Dogs home - although god knows why as they do rabbits, guinea pigs and loads of other small animals, but hey ho; who am I to argue?) in April(ish) 2011. She was 2. Her name was Rozene, but we changed it to Rosie as it sounds a helluva lot less like window cleaner…

Her pen was on the same side as the dog pens, and so she spent most of her days listening to a LOT of barking. I think this is why she isn't massively fussed about firework night.

When we first met her we were warned that she doesn't get on well with other cats, but she seemed friendly enough to us (if a little cautious). Sure enough, we regularly hear her kicking ass at the neighbourhood cats of an evening. And when we have friends over, she is as flirty as Jerry Hall after a particularly bad dance-off. Or something. (I hope that reference works - I wasn't even watching Strictly back then).

Rosie has surprised us since her arrival with her 'gifting'. One time she managed to drag a huge, live bird through the catflap (she's still the size of an older kitten). Another time - a massive rat. We're awaiting an aforementioned neighbourhood feline any day now…

Anyway, she gives the best cuddles, is incredibly clever, chirpy, polite and loving. You know she loves you if she starts licking your hair.

Oh, and she has a two-tone bum. She rocks.Monty Rosehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01958397616115845882noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7670672915454261297.post-73429096722613287972012-11-24T10:45:00.000+00:002013-02-27T17:38:18.121+00:00Brooch bouquet[caption id="attachment_133" align="aligncenter" width="225"] Finished brooch with portrait of Dad…[/caption]

I had wanted to make a brooch bouquet for our wedding for a long time. But my mum pooh-poohed the idea, and so we had several meetings with a florist, many of which were spent with me going on and on about how flowers die, so technically it was a massive waste of money and so I didn't want to have too many flowers. To a florist. I know.

Two or three weeks before the wedding, we started working on an extra wedding magazine at work to run alongside that issue. It's probably the worst thing to be doing a few weeks before your bash – immersed in other people's stunning, personal, highly individualised weddings. I started to get panicky that ours would be… not right. Not "us" anyway. And so "Fuck it, I'm having a bloody brooch bouquet!" It was very important for me to have a photo of my dad, so he could come down the aisle with me. Searching for a small frame that could dangle off the stems was tricky as they seemed to be sold only in bulk. Weirdly, a week before the wedding, I was going thru some of Dad's things, and found a small frame in which he used to keep a photo of me. Perfect.

Obviously I didn't have time to scour and collect meaningful bits and bobs slowly, like you're 'meant' to, but it actually helped with costs to run into the high street shops for gems – and meant I didn't feel too bad about tearing them apart. I did take two special bits for the bouquet. My dad gave me a gold-coloured rose brooch that belonged to me grandma (I collect Roses), and then I also used a butterfly brooch from Topshop that I've had pinned to my pin-board at work since I started and has followed me around all the magazines on which I've worked. It's kept me company so far, so I thought it would be nice to take it with me down the aisle.

I love crafts that are a bit slapdash and don't require specific, careful detail(which is why me a papercrafting will never be friends), so this was right up my street. I made enough flowers over the evenings on the run up to the wedding to use among real flowers in mine and my bridesmaids bouquets. Surprisingly fast (and addictive) to do. Every trinket is different, so it's all about working out how you're going to attach your wire. Then wrap green garden tape around each stem. Luckily, my florist took the flowers from me and incorporated them into my bouquet – so I didn't have to worry about that side of things. But it seems pretty simple, and now it's all dried, I might just take the trinket flowers and make them into a permanent posey.

[caption id="attachment_132" align="aligncenter" width="225"] Wind garden wire around your trinket…[/caption]

[caption id="attachment_131" align="aligncenter" width="244"] Lovely cluster of brooch flowers[/caption]Monty Rosehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01958397616115845882noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7670672915454261297.post-56176990937251103702012-11-23T22:28:00.000+00:002013-02-27T17:38:18.141+00:00Yarn-wrapped letter

When we featured Cranny + B's yarn-wrapped letter M in issue 20's Trends, I knew just had to have a go.

But before I got started, I had to purchase the Best Craft Gadget Ever So Far™ - a hot glue gun. Yuh. OK, let's pretend we never saw that (and we'll quietly fume and blame the evil crochet anyway). While I'm a crocheter-in-training, let's continue with another knitted bow, this time modified a little and in moss stitch, for extra sturdiness. Much better… Also, apologies for my chipped nails. Promise to be fully mani'd next time. Ahem.

[caption id="attachment_97" align="aligncenter" width="300"] Knit, purl, knit, purl… etc[/caption]

I used aran yarn and size 6mm (UK 4, US 10) needles
Cast on 37 stitches (more if you want your bow to be wider, but this may make it floppier).
Row 1: Moss stitch (k1, p1) to end.
Row 2: Moss stitch (k1, p1) to end.
Continue for eight rows (again more if you want a bigger bow) then cast off, and sew in your ends. Yes, it's floppy and would be much sturdier if crocheted – but I can't crochet **sad face** No matter how many times I've tried to teach myself, or others have sat patiently with me, or YouTube videos watched, I just can't seem to get my head around it. I think my main issue is that I can't see the stitches – not like I can with knitting anyway. Also it doesn't help that everyone who **can** crochet always comes out with the same, "Oh, but it's eeeeeeeasy," shenanigans. It's not feckin' easy, it's really really difficult, m'kay? I am giving crochet one last chance. We have a really cool cover project coming up – basically, if I can't learn to crochet with it, I'm never going to. It's do or die for you and me, Crochet – do or die!

So anyway. This knitted bow. Perfectly wondrous in its un-crochetedness, dammit.Monty Rosehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01958397616115845882noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7670672915454261297.post-68482210438774668532012-11-17T10:30:00.001+00:002013-02-27T17:38:18.065+00:00Gathered by Mollie Makes

It's technically off-sale now – but then when is a digital magazine not on sale, huh? – but I totally should mention that one of my projects features in issue 4 of our sister magazine for iPad, Gathered by Mollie Makes. Utterly proud to be in there, as it's my first ever published project. I've never been asked to do anything as far as freelancing goes – I'm not massively confident for one thing, and so I was rather thrilled to be asked to see if I could do some bow clips. Looked pretty simple to me, so I gave it a go and – tah dah! They're uber-simple and really effective.

As you can imagine, I'm a much more confident crafter now, so much so that you'll see a couple of my other projects coming up in Gathered soon.
